July 11, 2024

Based on žž analysis of recent regulatory events and market data, this report provides high-level intelligence on the  U.S. market for online casino gaming

  • The U.S. iGaming market is predicted to grow 22.1% from 2023 to 2024.
  • By 2027, the U.S. iGaming market is forecast to be worth $10.8bn to $13.7bn.
  • U.S. becomes largest iGaming market globally despite stalled expansion efforts.

LONDON, 10 July 2024—žž, a leading provider of regulatory intelligence solutions, has released its semi-annual U.S. iGaming Outlook report. It forecasts that total U.S. iGaming GGR will grow by 22 percent year-on-year to $8.2bn in 2024, with the seven U.S. iGaming states set to collectively overtake the $7.5bn U.K. iGaming sector to make the U.S. the largest regulated iGaming market in the world.

The report highlights the significant growth of the U.S. iGaming market since 2019 and žž's updated forecasts through 2027. Accordingly, the U.S. iGaming sector has experienced a steep change in scale since 2019, fuelled by changes to player behavior in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and heightened betting-to-gaming cross-sell facilitated by the rapid legislative rollout and consumer adoption of online sports betting. Against this backdrop, the comparatively mature New Jersey iGaming market almost quadrupled in size between 2019 and 2023.

“The U.S. now overtaking the U.K. highlights the U.S. iGaming paradox in 2024. Online casino games are generating significant revenue, especially in the three key markets of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Michigan. Yet, industry advocates are encountering more opposition in their efforts to expand regulation to additional states, as certain land-based casino operators and labor unions point to concerns of cannibalization and perceived competitive imbalances in online gambling,” explains James Kilsby, žž’s GamblingCompliance Chief Analyst and a co-author of the report.

As of June 2024, seven states have legalized online casino gaming following the launch of online casino games in Rhode Island in March 2024. Six states considered bills to authorize iGaming during their 2024 sessions but none approved legislation.

As part of žž's esteemed Outlook series, this report offers forward-looking intelligence and consolidated research on key segments of the global gambling industry. This intelligence is based on žž analysis of recent regulatory events and published market data, and views from žž analysts on key markets, legislative proposals and policy trends to watch in the coming months. This semi-annual report complements žž’s monthly U.S. Sports Betting Outlook, which focuses exclusively on the sports betting market with more limited reference to the adjacent online casino, poker and lottery verticals.
